Welcome to Western Cape Osteopaths

We provide a complete cycle of health care; from the immediate treatment of your pain and sports injury rehabilitation through to lifestyle changes and preventative exercise for your complete body and mind wellbeing.

Osteopathy is an area of medicine that identifies the importance between structure and function of the human body. Osteopathic medicine predates both physiotherapy and Chiropractic. It was founded in America in 1874 by Dr Andrew Taylor Still. Dr Still recognized that the human body has the ability to recover from injury but needs intervention to encourage the recovery process.

Osteopaths focus on the neuro-muscular-skeletal system using “hands on therapy techniques “such as traction, massage, manipulation, mobilisation and muscle energy techniques to treat conditions such as:

        • Neck and back pain

        • Headaches and migraines

        • Disc injuries including sciatica

        • Arthritis

        • Sports injuries

        • Post-traumatic injuries (e.g. whiplash)

        • Shoulder conditions (e.g. rotator cuff syndrome)

        • Elbow and wrist injuries

        • Muscle and ligament tears

        • Hip, Knee and ankle injuries

        • Pre and Post natal back pain

        • Repetitive strain injuries

Why have I not heard of Osteopathic medicine before?
It is a very small profession in South Africa with only 51 registered osteopaths in the country. With no teaching institutions in South Africa all practicing Osteopaths attained their qualifications overseas.

Is Osteopathic medicine regulated in South Africa?
It is a legally protected profession in South Africa. Osteopaths are required to meet qualification levels determined by the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) and they are required to maintain their registration with the AHPCSA.

What can Osteopathic medicine do for the sports person?
Osteopathic medicine helps to prevent and treat injuries. Mobility and joint stability is important to the sportsperson. Poor flexibility in the joints and muscles will prevent the body from performing at its optimum and is often a contributory element to injury.
By assessing the posture and condition of those structures which make the human body a dynamic machine (the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues), the Osteopath is able to promote a rapid recovery from injury.
All major premiership football teams and county rugby teams in the UK as well as the PGA golf tour have permanently employed osteopaths as part of their medical team.
