LIVING IN SOUTH AFRICA: REFLECTING ON OUR EXPERIENCE USING GROUP ANALYSIS

at
Francis Ames Room (Conference Room 4), Barnard Fuller Building, UCT Medical School, Anzio Road, Observatory
You are invited to join us at a Group Analytic Processing Workshop that will offer a group analytic approach to people’s current experience of living in South Africa. We will begin with reflections by Albie Sachs, former Constitutional Court judge and activist, and then make use of small and large groupsto open up a space for personal reflection and interpersonal discourse. We will introduce group analytic theory as a framework and utilise both its method and interpretation to help us understand some of the complex social dynamics that may be enacted in our groups.
This workshop is suitable for mental health professionals, educators and adult members of civil society, particularly those working with fellow South Africans.
Broadly defined, Group Analysis is an analytic approach that recognises the unconscious forces in the group situation and provides a method for investigating the psychic structures and processes that manifest themselves in particular contexts. It focuses on the relationship between the individual and the group, emphasising the essentially social nature of human experience. Through group processes we can explore what bearing the public and private aspects of a person’s life have on one another, and the dialectic between group and personal development. The founder of group analysis, Foulkes wrote: “What is inside is outside, the ‘social’ is not external but very much internal too and penetrates the innermost being of the individual personality.” (1973: 26).
