A Speech and Language Therapist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of speech pathologies affecting children or adults. Speech and Language pathologists provide a wide range of services, on an individual basis, support for families and groups, as well as providing related information to the general public.

Speech therapy services begin with initial screening for communication and swallowing disorders and continue with assessment and diagnosis, and consultation regarding management, intervention and treatment of a communication disorder. Provision of counselling and other follow up services for speech disorders are provided. Speech-language therapists provide treatment for the cognitive aspects of communication (e.g. attention, auditory memory, problem solving, executive functions); articulation, phonation and voice; language (syntax, semantics, comprehension of oral and written language, expression, pragmatics), auditory processing skills (e.g. analysis, synthesis, discrimination) and swallowing disorders. Speech and Language Pathology is also known as logopaedics.
